Western Australian Rugby League
The West Australian Rugby League is looking forward to an exciting period of growth as it mounts a strong bid to again have a Perth based team playing in the elite NRL competition.
The NRL have announced plans to add two new franchises from season 2013 and WA is strongly considered as a front-running contender. In 2010, the WARL entered a team into the prestigious S.G.Ball national u/18 competition, providing a pathway for talented WA juniors into higher levels of achievement in the sport.
The state U/18 team recently went undefeated in the combined affiliated states championships beating Victoria, SA and Northern Territory in the process.
The senior men’s team also earned the 2010 champions honour when they too went undefeated in the CAS tournament in Adelaide in June. WA enjoys the 3rd highest participation levels in the country and has top quality development programmes that have produced an impressive number of players that have achieved NRL status.
Furthermore, the standard of the local Harvey Norman Premiership competition has been enhanced not only by the productive junior development system, but also by the injection of many talented and experienced players from around the country and overseas.
With 9 clubs including those in growth areas Kalgoorlie and Bunbury, plus a flourishing competition in the Pilbara, the future of the game in WA is indeed very bright.
